Emperor Duy Tân as a Child

Duy Tân, 11th Emperor of the Nguyễn dynasty, was born in 1900 and ruled from 1907 to 1916. During his reign he supported movements to liberate Vietnam from colonialism. At the age of 16, the French dethroned and exiled him to the island of Réunion. He served in the French army as Major Vĩnh San during WWII with the highest honors for bravery and was later given the impression that he would be able to return to Vietnam to rule once again. However it was not to be. He died in 1945 in a plane crash in Central Africa when he flew from France to Réunion to visit his family. There are many who believe that it was an assassination ordered by the British since his return to Vietnam would put the British Empire at a disadvantage as they were just starting to deal with decolonisation at the time.

This photo was taken in 1907 when he was a child emperor in Vietnam.
